How to Create Christmas Red and Green Colored Popcorn

Christmas Colored Popcorn

It's hard to look at the colors red and green and not get in a Christmas mood. We love all the lights and decorations and ribbons. But, of course, we love popcorn the most. So did we make red and green popcorn? Of course we did! Because bowls of Christmas colored popcorn around the house make us extra happy.

Our favorite, fool-proof, works every time way of making colored popcorn is to make a buttery sugar syrup, add color and bake it in to keep it crunchy. We start by dissolving granulated sugar in a little butter and water along with a pinch of salt. Where there is sugar there should also always be salt to bring out the flavor.

We strongly recommend gel food colors instead of the thin liquid ones you find in the grocery store. The thick, concentrated colors require fewer drops to get a rich shade without watering down the mix or adding an artificial flavor. Christmas shades of red and green are pretty deep but we found that 4 to 5 drops of gel color were enough to create the right shades. Once you have your colored sugar mixture, drop in a few popped kernels and stir. You'll easily see if you have the right shade or if you need to add another drop or two.

Take your time mixing the popcorn into the colored liquid to make sure all the kernels are well coated. You can spread them out on the baking sheet and let them air dry but baking on the color adds crispiness and a longer shelf life to the popcorn. You can, of course, string the colored popcorn to be used as a garland on your Christmas tree. But then you need to make more so there's enough to both eat and decorate. And then you'll need to make more still because this also makes a great gift. Just fill a cello bag with one or both colors, tie a pretty ribbon around it and hand it out to all the popcorn lovers in your life. We actually recommend you make a lot of batches to keep in bowls around the house. They will disappear quickly.
