Want a recipe that's insanely delicious, will appeal to both kids and adults and is also extra fun to look at but still really simple to make yourself? Yeah, we thought so. Our popcorn dirt cake fits all those needs and, honestly, we can't decide if it's more cute or more tasty.
The "dirt" is made up of crushed chocolate sandwich cookies. And, if you've seen real dirt, you know it's full of white pebbles. But, of course, popcorn is way tastier. The filling is a delicious concoction of cream cheese, pudding and whipped topping. No baking needed. Just alternate layers of dirt and filling. Then top the final layer of dirt with our popcorn gravel, some gummy worms and maybe a creepy candy skull or two.
You don't have to serve this in a flower pot but why not, right? It looks great and you can either use one large pot or use mini pots to create individual servings. It's the perfect spooky Halloween treat but we love it year round, even with the candy skulls.
Get ready for a frightfully fun treat with our Popcorn Dirt Cake! This
ghoulishly delicious dessert is packed with crunchy popcorn and crushed
chocolate cookies, and a few eerie extras, making it the perfect
addition to your Halloween festivities.
Ingredients
1 Package (approx. 14 oz) Oreos or other chocolate sandwich cookie
8 oz Cream cheese
1 Stick (8 tbsp) butter, softened
½ Cup powdered sugar
3 ½ Cups whole milk
2 Packages (approx. 3.4 oz each) instant vanilla pudding
Pop about ¼ cup of the Scary Movie Graveyard Black popcorn kernels in a clear oil, such as vegetable, coconut or canola. (You don’t want the popcorn to be yellow. Instead, you want it to be white, like pieces of rock.) Need directions for how to pop your popcorn? See our tutorial here.
Next, crush the chocolate sandwich cookies in a food processor and set aside.
In a large bowl, beat together the cream cheese, softened butter and confectioners sugar.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and two packages of vanilla pudding mix. Whisk in the Cool Whip and fold into the butter and cream cheese mixture.
NOTE: If you’re using a flower pot, seal up the drainage hole with some masking tape. Then, line the pot with either tin foil or parchment paper, in order to make the pot food-safe.
Next, you’ll create your layers. First, place a layer of the crushed cookies on the bottom of the flower pot or serving dish. Then add a layer of the filling. Continue adding as many layers as your container will hold but make sure you start and end with the crushed cookies. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Before serving, garnish the top of the cookie “dirt” with popcorn and gummy worms.
