If you love bagels, and we do, you've probably tried an "everything" bagel at some point. And you were probably wowed. Sure, we love sesame and poppy seed bagels but the everything seasoning is, well, everything.
This mixture of garlic, onion, white and black sesame seeds, poppy seeds and salt is what's known as everything bagel, or, everything but the bagel, seasoning. And you can make it or buy it without the bagel. Not because we don't want it on there but because we also want it on lots of other things including everything bagel popcorn, of course!
The seasoning became popular in the 1980's and now you can buy it in a jar, ready made, in most grocery stores. Or, of course, you can make your own which would also allow you to customize it. Like more garlic, less onion, no poppy seeds? No problem, just adjust the amounts to suit your preferences.
Now that we have it, what are we putting it on? Homemade bread and bagels, of course. But also roasted vegetables, cream cheese, avocado toast, eggs and cottage cheese just to name a few. It adds a nutty flavor, a bit of crunch and elevates almost everything!
Given our popcorn obsession, it's no surprise we made everything bagel popcorn. We just popped our movie night kernels the usual way, drizzled on a bit of butter and tossed it with a generous amount of everything bagel seasoning. And then we made another batch because this one disappeared in record time.
The everything bagel flavor combo of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, and onion that we all love, but in popcorn form. This recipe brings together two snack-time
favorites in a deliciously simple way, and teaches you how to DIY
your own everything bagel seasoning.
If making your own seasoning, combine the dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, sea salt, black sesame seeds, white sesame seeds and poppy seeds in a bowl. Store any leftovers in an airtight jar.
Make the popcorn by adding the canola or vegetable oil and 2 to 3 of the movie night kernels to a large pot with a lid. Heat on high until the kernels pop. That will let you know that your oil is hot enough.
Add the remaining kernels and the salt. Cover, continue cooking on high, shaking the pot often, until the popping stops. Remove the popcorn to a large bowl.
Cooking the popcorn in oil gives it enough of a coating for the seasoning to adhere. But, if you prefer, add a bit of butter flavored spray or pour over some melted butter. Toss with the everything bagel seasoning and serve.
