Our Cheesy Cajun Popcorn recipe is the perfect movie snack for a New Orleans movie marathon. It’s Cajun spices and cheesy white cheddar come together to make a spicy Cheesy Cajun popcorn snack you’ll love. We like making with Dell Cove® Classic Movie popcorn kernels, which you can find here
In honor of some of our favorite trips to that area, what better way to enjoy this popcorn snack than to watch some movies about New Orleans? The Big Easy. The Crescent City. NOLA. Nawlins. Whichever way you have it, there’s nowhere quite like New Orleans. And we’re clearly not alone in our NOLA passion because there are so many movies either about New Orleans – or filmed in New Orleans – to love.
Our family has some favorites that we’ve watched during for our family’s Sunday movie night tradition, where we are pairing popcorn and cocktails with our favorite films. So, here is our New Orleans movie snack and drink pairing:
MOVIE: Treme (2010 – 2013). This series, written by “The Wire”‘s David Simon focuses on post-Katrina New Orleans and is named after the neighborhood that gave birth to jazz. It’s powerful television and worth binging.
COCKTAIL: New Orleans Hurricane. The classic New Orleans-style Hurricane cocktail is a boozy, sweet drink that blends rum with fruit juice. This version is bright, fruity and tasty, without being too sugary. Get our recipe here.
David first discovered that our Dell Cove® Spicy Cajun and Dell Cove® White Cheddar popcorn seasonings blended well when we were actually staying in New Orleans on a quick weekend getaway. He had met up with some foodie friends in the area, who started playing with our spice blends in the kitchen - as true foodies do! Happily, all agreed that the result was delicious!
Using a 6 quart pan, add oil (vegetable, peanut or coconut work best because they have a higher smoke point than olive oil) and 4 popcorn kernels. (Essentially, enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan.) Cover the pan with a lid and place it over medium heat.
SECOND, POP YOUR POPCORN
After these 4 test kernels pop, the oil is extremely hot. VERY CAREFULLY add your popcorn kernels to the hot oil, re-cover your pan and shake the pan back and forth, to coat the corn kernels and prevent burning. When the popping sound slows to one pop every 3 – 5 seconds, remove the pan from the heat and put the popcorn into a big bowl.
THIRD, MELT YOUR BUTTER
Put the butter into a small bowl and put it in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds. Add more time if needed.
Remove bowl from microwave and pour the melted butter over your bowl of popped popcorn.
Optional: You can also use ghee, or instead use a spritz or two of olive oil.
FOURTH, SEASON YOUR POPCORN
Dell Cove® seasonings stick best to popcorn that is slightly moist and freshly popped.
Sprinkle the Dell Cove® Spicy Cajun and White Cheddar Popcorn Seasonings onto the popcorn. Using a spoon, gentle stir the popcorn to help the seasoning coat the popped corn. Repeat this process until the popcorn is seasoned to your taste, and serve
