How to Make a Kid Friendly Snack Board with Popcorn
Whether you've got a house full of kids still on summer or holiday break or need ideas for after school and weekend kid entertaining, we've got the perfect snack board for you.
We all know kids love snacks and teenagers in particular seem to always be hungry. We obviously want them to have healthy snacks but we want to balance it with fun foods and little treats. So we started with a base of our Dell Cove rainbow popcorn. This variety grows all these different colored kernels naturally. When popped, it's white with a slightly tinted center and has a fluffy, crunchy consistency and classic "corny" taste.
One of the ways we believe helps kids to eat healthy or try foods they might otherwise not choose is to get them involved in the cooking and preparation.
So teach them how to pop the corn on the stovetop and avoid pre-made bags. Help them cut the fruit, let them tell you their favorite candies and cheeses. Our goal is to include both good for you and not so great for you options.
We raided our cookie cutter collection for small shapes like stars, flowers and leaves.
We sliced apples, watermelons and cantaloupes and cut out the shapes. We also left some long, easy to grab, pieces of watermelon.
Any cheeses will do but we chose cheddar, Gouda and some little Babybel semi-soft cheese rounds. Be sure to cube the hard cheeses for easy grabbing and peel off some of the rind of the Babybels so people can see what it is.
Plus they look so cute that way! We added a handful of blueberries, although grapes are also a great option.
Next it was time for some sweet treats. A sprinkling of M&M's, some gummy sour candies and our favorite mini chocolate chip cookies.
We've found that the popcorn goes the fastest so we pop extra and refill the bowl as needed.
By the end of the day the whole snack board has usually been devoured and the kids got some helpings of fruit, protein and whole grains in addition to their sweet treats. Let us know what your kids thought of this idea.
